Notarize in jail: can it be done?

Notarize in jail: can it be done?

My friend/family/business partner/client/etc. is incarcerated in a San Diego Jail. Can he or she notarize in jail? Can you come notarize in jail? How does it work? How much does it cost?
A very common question in San Diego County regarding Notary Services is if it can be done while the signer is in jail/prison.
The simple answer is, usually.

The process varies from jail to jail, and prison to prison, but most jails and prisons in San Diego County allow a notary to come to the facility during business hours, present their certification and identification, and be escorted to conduct the signing/notarization.

This is usually a time consuming job, taking between 1-2 hours on average from arriving at the facility, to completion.

What do I need to help the incarcerated person get paperwork notarized?
-The document needing to be notarized.
-The inmates information, and the facility they are located in: The notary needs to know the facility’s specific guidelines and rules for professional Notary Public visits, it is handy and much appreciated if the client calls the facility for this information, but some notaries, including us, know most of the policies of the local facilities from frequently working at them.
